Water Supply Sources
Most Minnesotans believe they have an unlimited supply of water. Although this is sometimes true, the residents of Minnetonka should feel fortunate that the city has a very good water supply source. Many people throughout the United States pay substantially more for water due to shortages of usable water.
Our drinking water supply originates from 16 groundwater wells drilled into the Prairie Du Chien-Jordan aquifer. This is a large naturally occurring geologic supply area. These wells vary in depth from 405 to 575 feet.
History
Minnetonka’s first well was drilled in the Holiday Lake area in 1960. This was the beginning of Minnetonka’s water utility. The first water tower was constructed in 1962. The majority of the water distribution system was constructed in the mid 1970’s.
Due to rapid population growth over the last 30 years, the system has grown to include, 8 water treatment plants, approximately 3,100 fire hydrants, 280 miles of water main and 15,000 service connections. We have eight elevated storage facilities and one reservoir. Demand for water continues to increase with the growth and redevelopment of the city.
