Drinking Water Quality
General Information

The quality of the city’s water remains excellent. The water meets the standards set by the National Safe Drinking Water Act. Laboratory tests are conducted regularly. Tests indicate that no harmful bacteria or chemical contaminants are in the water supply that exceed accepted standards.
The condition of the approximately 300-mile distribution system ranges from fair to very good. Most of the water mains are flushed each spring. This procedure removes rust and sediment that collects in the distribution system during the course of a year.
Questions about chromium?
A December 20, 2010, article in The Washington Post regarding the presence of a possible carcinogen, hexavalent chromium, in the drinking water of 31 U.S. cities caused some Minnetonka residents to ask questions about Minnetonka’s drinking water. The quality of the city’s water remains excellent, and meets the standards set by the National Safe Drinking Water Act. The city of Minnetonka’s water supply has been tested by the Minnesota Department of Health for chromium since 1999. The test performed is capable of detecting concentrations greater that 10 ppm (parts per million), and in all tests performed chromium has not been detected. In addition, the Minnesota Department of Health has announced that no Minnesota community public water systems have exceeded the federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for chromium. For a copy of Minnetonka’s test results, or for more information about Minnetonka’s drinking water, call Jim Malone, Minnetonka utility maintenance manager, at 952.988.8410.

- This is a summary of laboratory test results for the city’s drinking water in 2003. This year’s report delivers good news. There were no contaminants found that exceed levels set by the EPA for safe drinking water. In previous years, we have exceeded the levels set for copper, but due to our corrosion control efforts, (the addition of phosphates to the water) we are now again in compliance.
