Considerations when buying a tree
- Plan for the tree’s mature size.

- The best way to do this is to go out to your yard with a tape measure.
- Imagine your tree 50 years from now.
- Choose the right tree for the right spot.

- Set the tree up for success, and pay attention to the existing landscape and the tree’s natural characteristics.
- Keep in mind factors such as seasonal flooding, snow storage in the winter, structures, driveways, walkways, sun exposure, mowing patterns, gardens, and your ability to hand water in times of drought.
- Read the species summaries to find out more.
- Make sure to look toward the sky.

- Pay attention to power lines, nearby trees, and future conflicts such as fences or decks.
- If you have overhead lines, choose one of the three ornamental trees on the list.
- Think about your neighbors.

- Please refrain from planting the trees within 20 feet of the road edge to prevent conflicts with vehicles passing along the road.
- Be sure to give it enough room so that its mature canopy will be entirely on your property.
- Your current neighbor may love trees but do not restrict a future neighbor’s free use of their yard.

Tree planting guidelines
Please follow these city recommended guidelines before you purchase or plant a tree in your yard:
Distances from:
- Water and fire hydrants
- 10–15′
- Gas
- 5–10′
- Street lights
- 20–25′, depending on size of street light.
- Road edge
- At least 20′ to prevent conflict with snow storage and maintenance issues. No evergreens planted within 25′ of road edge due to sightline issues, growth form and pruning challenges.
- Corner
- Nothing over 2.5′ high is allowed to obstruct views within 25′ of the corner of the pavement (for sightline/safety).
- Stop signs
- 25′, but do not block; may offset from sign.
- Overhead wires
- There are specific criteria. Ask Xcel Energy for guidelines.
- Property lines
- Be sure to give the tree room so that its mature canopy will be on your property. Do not restrict a neighbor’s free use of their yard.
