What can residents do about emerald ash borer?
While emerald ash borer’s entry into Minnetonka is ultimately expected, residents can help by slowing the spread of emerald ash borer (EAB) and by preparing for its arrival.
- Don’t move firewood
- Human-assisted spread of EAB can be stopped if ash wood is bought and sold locally. There is a quarantine prohibiting the transport of all hardwood firewood in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties. Learn more about buying firewood locally.
- Diversify your landscape
- Plan for the future loss of ash trees by reforesting your property now with diverse species. Learn more about reforestation options.
- Chemical treatment
- Consider chemical treatment of select, structurally sound, and valuable ash trees. Learn more about Chemical Treatments for EAB.
- Educate yourself
- Learn how to identify ash trees and know the signs and symptoms of EAB and its look-alikes. Visually inspect your ash trees and report signs of infestation (especially woodpecker activity) to the city forester at 952.988.8421 or the Minnesota Department of Agriculture at 651.201.6684.
- Spread the word
- Talk to your neighbors, friends, family, and coworkers about EAB. Managing this pest requires community support.
- Stay informed
- Stay informed about where EAB has been found by visiting http://www.mda.state.mn.us/eab.
