Planning Project
Transit planning
Project description
Hennepin County and the communities of Minneapolis, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, and Eden Prairie have been working together for several years to plan for Light Rail transit (LRT) in the southwest metro. Recently, with the participation of the communities, Hennepin County started the process of developing the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), which will study the environmental effects of the proposed LRT along the Southwest Transitway.
As a part of the previous studies by Hennepin County on the Southwest Transitway, transit station locations have been identified. Each station will, of course, become a focal-point for passengers getting on and off the LRT. However, history has shown that transit stations are also the focal point for development and re-development. In Minnetonka, two stations are proposed, one in the Opus Business Park near Bren Road West, and another to the north near Shady Oak Road and Excelsior Boulevard. In all, 12 station sites have been designated within Minnetonka, Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie. Additional station sites have also been identified in Minneapolis.
Hennepin County has retained consulting firm Hay Dobbs to conduct a station area study to help plan for future land uses within a 1/2 mile radius of each station. The study is expected to be complete in Summer 2009.
