West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus has the potential to cause serious illness. It is of most concern in the summer and fall months and can infect mosquitoes, birds, horses, humans and other mammals.
The best way to prevent West Nile Virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using an insect repellent containing an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET or Picaridin. Other ways to prevent bites include:
- Stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active, at dusk and dawn. If you must be outside, wear long pants and sleeves and wear an insect repellent.
- Keep mosquitoes out of the house. Make sure door and window screens are in good repair.
- Ensure there are no potential mosquito breeding sites on your property, including tires and abandoned swimming pools. Empty any containers of standing water, including wading pools and flower pots.
